Automotive Electric LLC in Grand Rapids, MN, more than doubled their size with a 5,500 sf addition ready for occupancy Summer 2024. The addition houses five new vehicle bays as well as a private office, break room and restrooms. This is a design/ build project with HAWK Construction Inc. as the general contractor, and the owner working very closely with us on the design. HAWK supplied our own carpentry crews and concrete crews.

Yanmar CE North America broke ground in June 2023 on a new 32,000 sf expansion at their Grand Rapids facility. The expansion will greatly increase manufacturing capacity.
The new section will house a paint system that will increase paint capacity up to three times. Hundreds of additional jobs are projected to be added over the next five years.  The Minnesota Trade Office selected Yanmar CE North America as a recipient of the 2022 Governor’s International Trade Award in the Large Company category as a result of the expansion project.

In 2017, MN Diversified Industries, partnered with HAWK Construction on this Design/Build project for their new facility in Hibbing, MN. A 35,000 SF manufacturing plant, it includes the factory area, offices, conference room, and training/lunchroom. In addition to the building program, the site had its own programming requirements: incoming supply trucks, outgoing products, staff parking, public vehicle drop-off, etc. MDI is a producer of corrugated plastic products for mailrooms, warehouses, medical labs, etc. “Plastics with Purpose- every product we manufacture helps support our mission to provide job opportunities for people with disabilities.”

After many years in the same location, Ray’s Sport & Marine had simply outgrown their space. In 2016 HAWK did a feasibility study to compare the merits of: 1) an addition/renovation of the existing facility on the existing site, 2) a complete tear- down, re-build on the existing site, or 3) construct a new facility on a new site. After determining a new building on a new site was the most feasible way to proceed, a new facility on Hwy 2, just blocks from their existing site, was constructed. Completely one level, the nearly 15,000 sf space provides easy access between the large public showroom, office and employee areas, and the shop. Careful consideration was given to site development which required maneuvering boats and trailers around the parking lot, and into/out of the building.

A merger of Rapid Fitness 24/7 and an existing Anytime Fitness resulted in the construction of the new Anytime Fitness on Golf Course Rd. In addition to the gym, a second business is located in the new 8,400 sf facility. HAWK Construction worked closely with the owner to design/build the gym and Rapid Nutrition on time and within budget. The scale and shape of the building is meant to provide a transition between the large commercial buildings to the East, and the residential area to the West.

Mueller Orthodontist Clinic is a 2,400 SF clinic built in 2018. A HAWK design-build project, the owner was a part of the design team from site selection, to interior building design, to interior and exterior finish selection. Dr Mueller reviewed several site options in the City of Grand Rapids, before selecting one conveniently located on the way to, and from, the local Middle School, where many of his clients are enrolled. Convenient, easy site access for busy parents was a major design factor.

Rapids Brewing Co is a 6,800 sf adaptive re-use project in downtown Grand Rapids, MN. Formerly a movie theater, and more recently used for storage, the building has been transformed into a lively tap room and on-site brewery. Live music graces the stage where there once were movie screens. Several unique details were salvaged from the theater days including decorative pilasters and an original plaster wall relief. A full wall mural of Marilyn Monroe, originally part of the theatre’s lobby, now watches over the brewery. After demolishing an adjacent building, a commercial kitchen with wood fired stove was added to the theatre. The new open site also features sunny outdoor seating, and a covered patio with fire pits.

Built in 2015, this was the second expansion to the Blandin Foundation. The addition included extensive renovations to the existing structure. A lecture hall with stepped seating was demolished to make room for a lower level lunchroom/conference space and a main level conference room. The Blandin Foundation actively seeks community organizations to share in the use of the main floor conference room, so access to the hall, without access to the Foundation space, was a major criteria for the HAWK design team. The addition also allowed for a level of new office space, where DIRT glass wall systems were used extensively.

Thousand Lakes Sporting Goods was a 2018 Design/Build renovation project that created retail space out of previous restaurant space. The 4,000 sq. foot building was nearly gutted and re-imagined to serve sporting equipment rather than food service. Exposed trusses opened the space up, while the use of wood and stone makes avid anglers feel they’re already in their natural element.

Rock Ridge HS (currently under construction) is a 280,000 SF campus which will combine the educational communities of Eveleth, Gilbert, and Virginia into an academy style HS. Scheduled to be completed Spring 2023, the project has as many as 40 HAWK team members, pouring, forming, screeding, shoring, and finishing the heavy concrete mixture. 20’ high poured walls and poured stadium stairs are among the unique features of the building which promises to “incorporate community and nature into the larger educational experience.”
