Design-Build

In 2017, MN Diversified Industries, partnered with HAWK Construction on this Design/Build project for their new facility in Hibbing, MN. A 35,000 SF manufacturing plant, it includes the factory area, offices, conference room, and training/lunchroom. In addition to the building program, the site had its own programming requirements: incoming supply trucks, outgoing products, staff parking, public vehicle drop-off, etc. MDI is a producer of corrugated plastic products for mailrooms, warehouses, medical labs, etc. “Plastics with Purpose- every product we manufacture helps support our mission to provide job opportunities for people with disabilities.”

After many years in the same location, Ray’s Sport & Marine had simply outgrown their space. In 2016 HAWK did a feasibility study to compare the merits of: 1) an addition/renovation of the existing facility on the existing site, 2) a complete tear- down, re-build on the existing site, or 3) construct a new facility on a new site. After determining a new building on a new site was the most feasible way to proceed, a new facility on Hwy 2, just blocks from their existing site, was constructed. Completely one level, the nearly 15,000 sf space provides easy access between the large public showroom, office and employee areas, and the shop. Careful consideration was given to site development which required maneuvering boats and trailers around the parking lot, and into/out of the building.

A merger of Rapid Fitness 24/7 and an existing Anytime Fitness resulted in the construction of the new Anytime Fitness on Golf Course Rd. In addition to the gym, a second business is located in the new 8,400 sf facility. HAWK Construction worked closely with the owner to design/build the gym and Rapid Nutrition on time and within budget. The scale and shape of the building is meant to provide a transition between the large commercial buildings to the East, and the residential area to the West.

Mueller Orthodontist Clinic is a 2,400 SF clinic built in 2018. A HAWK design-build project, the owner was a part of the design team from site selection, to interior building design, to interior and exterior finish selection. Dr Mueller reviewed several site options in the City of Grand Rapids, before selecting one conveniently located on the way to, and from, the local Middle School, where many of his clients are enrolled. Convenient, easy site access for busy parents was a major design factor.

Oak Hill Assisted Living was a vision brought to HAWK that fit the “Design/Build” process perfectly. The owners had a distinct care-giving model in mind, where a smaller facility in a home-like environment would allow for flexibility and a high level of care. At 7,500 sf each, the two distinct buildings were created from the ground up to feel like a real home. The homes are linked together by the Acorn Gallery, a space that bring people together- both within the Oak Hill Assisted Living and the larger outside community of families, friends and neighbors.
